Today, the Austrian students began their study of Chinese. In the morning, they began to learn their ABCs in Chinese under the instruction of Miss Xu Dan.
In the afternoon, the students had a taste of the Peking opera. Some of them had never heard of the Peking opera before though some got a smattering knowledge of it on TV or pictures. It was the first time for them to paint the masks, wear the costumes and learn the basic stage poses of the Peking opera personally, so they were full of curiosity and expectation of this event of experience. Two teachers from the Lanyun Opera Society of Jiangsu University painted the Peking opera masks for two foreign students and invited several students to wear Peking opera costumes and learn some basic stage poses like throwing long sleeves, riding a horse, reining the horse etc.
The following performances of Chinese operas, including the Peking opera named
A Prince of the Desert
, the Yueju opera named
Butterfly Lovers
opera and the Peking opera named
Boudoir Sorrows
were all loudly applauded by the Austrian students.
They all regarded this event as a unique experience and were deeply impressed by the fine makeup and costume of the Peking opera. Besides, it is worth mentioning that the interpreter for this opera-experiencing event was a German exchange student named Liu Dahua, who had learned Chinese for not longer than one year, but had already got a good command of the Chinese language and adapted herself to the Chinese life.
In the evening, students went to the Binjiang Road to take a walk just like an average local citizen along the riverside plank road all the way from the Beigushan Treasure Tripod and the Dongwu Wonderland to the Springtide Square in the light first of the setting sun and then of the brilliant street lamps.
