I. INTRODUCTION
Located in Jiangsu province, China in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, Zhenjiang has a total area of 3,843 square kilometers and is worldly renowned for its long-standing culture and a history of more than 3,000 years. The scenery in the City of Zhenjiang features the unique beauty of “real mountains and waters”, which has long been reputed as “the Peerless Landscape in the world”. As a famous site of Chinese historical events and love stories, Zhenjiang boasts of the folk tale of “Lady White’s bringing forth flood to overflow Jinshan Temple” and the historical story of “Liu Bei got married to his wife at the Ganlu Temple”. Zhenjiang is also the city where such great authors lived as Liu Hsieh, Xiao Tong (Crown Prince of Zhaoming of the Liang Dynasty) and Shen Kuo, who respectively fathered Wen Xin Diao Long (The Literary Mind), Zhao Ming Wen Xuan (Selections of Refined Works) , and Meng Xi Bi Tan (Writings beside the Mengxi Creek). A great many literary masterpieces have been composed here in Zhenjiang lauding its beautiful landscape, of which the most frequently intoned, to name just a few, are “If my relatives and friends ask after me, /Please show to them my regards /In a manner you have known so well: /My heart is like ice in a crystal vase.” by Wang Changling in the Tang dynasty who was then seeing his friend off at Zhenjiang port, and “Where are we to command the best view of the homeland of ours, /there is nowhere better than on top of the Beigu Tower” by Xin Qiji in the Song dynasty at a time when the northern territories of China were taken by the Jin Kingdom. Of the many historical sites in Zhenjiang that have been integrated into the cultural heritage of our city, the most celebrated ones are the Jinshan Temple that covers the Jinshan Hill, the Dinghui Temple hiding itself in the Jiaoshan Hill, the Longchang Temple at the Baohua Mountain, and the sacred Taoist temple at the Maoshan Mountain that were respectively constructed more than 1,500, 1,400, 1,500, and 2,000 years ago, as well as the Xinjin Ferry at the foot of the Yuntai Hill featuring a scene of “1,000 years of history at one glance” .
Zhenjiang is both “a National Famous Historical and Cultural City” and “a city of mountains and forests”, where a landscape of forests, mountains and waters mix with the many cultural sites and historical relics. The city proper of Zhenjiang just lies in between the three hills of Jinshan, Jiaoshan and Beigushan in the north lining the bank of the Yangtze River and the Nanshan Hill and the Shilichanshan Hill in the south that combine to encompass its culturally-loaded streetscape with luxuriant forests. The newly paved “Greenway” winding up the ridges and down the valleys of the Nanshan Hill provides a good place for both residents and tourists to build up their bodies and enjoy the hermit culture at the same time. In the aspect of its modern urban planning, the City of Zhenjiang adopts the conception of productive landscape to strike a balance between the traditional style of Jiangnan gardens (gardens on the Yangtze Delta) and the contemporary livable houses. In order to create a best living environment for its residents that features “a city south of the Yangtze River, a city of mountains and forests and a city of history and culture”, the planners have built 26 mountainous parks in the 3 urban districts of Zhenjiang. In 2011, Zhenjiang was honored the title of “Ten Best Livable City”.
This is short-term project aimed at providing an opportunity for its participants to experience the Chinese culture at Zhenjiang highlighting both its landscape and historical culture, and a platform for the international students or young people to communicate with each other in this unique city of China south of the Yangtze River.
II. HIGHLIGHTS
