Auspicious Words of Blessing, Fragrant Chinese Tea with Ancient Rhythm
Date:2023-07-26 View:

On 24 July 2023, the 2023 "China Roots-Seeking Tour" summer camp in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province, learnt and experienced Chinese knots and the art of tea.

An Yongfeng, a representative inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Jingkou District and an artist who weaves Chinese knots, briefly introduced the earliest uses of Chinese knots to the campers. Through the introduction, the campers learnt that knots were first used for counting and then gradually evolved into a kind of knotting art.

An Yongfeng chose one kinds of the Knot as the main teaching content. The campers tried to follow the mnemonic "one presses two, two presses three, three presses four, four wears one", and some of the students who were not very good at it either asked the teacher or looked for help from other students. All the campers completed their own knots after repeated attempts.

Zixan Xu from the Spanish Chinese Education Centre said, "I'm going to give this Chinese knot to my grandma, and I'm going to tie another one to give to my grandpa in the hope that it will bring them health."

After the Chinese knotting lesson, the campers started the tea ceremony. Firstly, Ms Wang Fang, Principal of Zhenjiang Runmingyuan Vocational School, introduced the campers to the bowing, palm stretching and finger snapping rituals of the tea ceremony and how these rituals are used. The campers showed their respect to the teachers with the bowing salute they learnt.

After the tea ceremony knowledge was explained, the teacher conducted a tea ceremony demonstration and introduced the utensils used in the process. The campers tasted the Yunnan Dian Hong brewed by the teacher and praised the mellow and unique aroma of the Chinese tea broth.

After the demonstration, the campers were divided into small groups to use the tea utensils to make tea. The young campers took turns to experience the process of making tea with each other's tips, and tried it out under the guidance of the teacher. Warming, brewing, pouring ...... tea they did it in style, reverence and preciousness in every demeanour and action. Smelling, nodding, every move shows the beauty of Chinese etiquette and culture.

Today's learning and practice allows campers to experience and understand the endogenous dynamics of traditional Chinese culture and its modern style in another way, and also injects more enthusiasm and love into their journey to find their roots.
